Driving to NJ

December 2017

View 2015 Grenada (and 2013) & A Funeral (2017) and an Accident (2018) on greatgrandmaR's travel map.

After I got back from the Hawaiian cruise my next trip was an unhappy one.

My sister's husband died on the 12th of December 2017 after a protracted battle with cancer. He was cremated. My sister arranged for a memorial service to take place on Saturday 30 December. I had a choice of several hotels and I opted not to stay in the Marriott hotel where we had stayed for my sister and brother-in-law's 50th anniversary in 2011. Instead we stayed at Homewood Suites.

I was afraid it would snow on Friday, so we left a little before 2 on Thursday.

but we crossed the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal about 5.

The sun was setting. We found ourselves on that little bit of Delaware road which is a toll road ($1) but which has no notices as to what the toll is. By the time we crossed the Delaware River on I-295,

it was full dark. Bob had to use the bathroom and we stopped at the first rest stop where they had portalets. He said it was so dark that he couldn't see where to go unless he kept the door open.

We got to the hotel a little before 7. They had Happy Hour, I got cream of asparagus soup and some (very dry) sliders, Sliders and soup

and Bob had chicken nuggets. There were a lot of children there, mostly Jewish.

Our room has a kitchen with a full sized refrigerator, a microwave, a dishwasher and a two burner stove. The shower has a seat and there are two TVs - one in the living room and one in the bedroom. I just unpacked enough to get out my nightgown and we went to bed.

Friday 29 December

We got up and went to breakfast - they have eggs, potatoes, fruit, hot and cold cereal, juice and coffee. Bob said he wanted to get gas and he said BJs would be the cheapest, so I found a BJs and we made our way out to US 1 and drove up to where BJs was - on the map. It turned out that what was there was a Costco. BJs was across the street. When we got over there, we found that it didn't have a gas station - probably because in NJ you can't pump your own gas.

So we went back down US 1 and got gas, and then went down past the McDonalds and ate at the White Castle. I could not read the menu from where I was so I took photos of it and then expanded them in the phone.

I got a breakfast toast sandwich and Bob got regular sliders. I had a peach smoothie to drink and he had a milk shake.

After we got back to our room, our second daughter (B) arrived - she had flown from Paris to Philadelphia with her daughter, put her daughter on a plane to Miami, rented a car and driven to Princeton. She was sharing our third daughters room, but she wasn't here yet, so she came up to our room.

She decided to pick our third daughter (E) up at the airport (E was flying in from Texas) and she took Bob with her. Just as they got to the cell phone lot, her phone died, so Bob used his old flip phone with the cracked screen to call E and connect with her.

We had dinner at Ruby Tuesday - the four of us

Family Gathers for the Memorial Service

Saturday 30 December

View 2015 Grenada (and 2013) on greatgrandmaR's travel map.

It was snowing when we got up this morning. The predicted Friday snow waited until Saturday. We were all going to meet for lunch before the actual service at a restaurant near the church where the memorial service was to be held.

We went down to breakfast with B and E and then waited to see when our oldest daughter D and our son et al would get here. D driving up from MD had estimated 1:00. She said that it was snowing harder as they went north. Lots of messaging. Finally about noon, D said they were at the restaurant, so we all got into our car Bob missed the first turn - my fault because I said it wasn't the right turn even though it was, but we got to the church eventually and went into the church parking lot and parked in the single handicapped space. Although I saw later that there were two meters out front which were 'bagged" and the bags said Handicapped on them.

When we got there, there were two tables - one with our granddaughter and her new husband, and our grandson, and the other with D, her husband and my son who had driven up from SC. Bob and E and B sat with D and our son, and I sat with my grandchildren. I had a hamburger with an egg. It was very hard to eat. We left there a little after 2 and went over to the church. My granddaughter MB from CT had not arrived yet.

The service started at 3 and was nice, if a bit long for the hardness of the pews. The new minister was especially long winded. My sister Barbara got up and started things off - she said it was the first time she'd given a speech without her husband George listening to it first and it broke my heart since I knew that he had commanded her not to speak at all when they renewed their vows. Everyone was quite complimentary of George- recounting how he taught himself new programming languages etc. I was almost convinced. I didn't take any photos during the service

Then we went down to the basement where I thought we were to have a reception but it turned out to be a whole dinner. Since I did not know that I didn't eat very much. Just as well because whatever I ate repeated on me all night and now I have to stay close to the bathroom.

D and her husband and our son's crew left after the dinner. They had pictures taken of the my sister's family, but by the time I realized that, D and our son had gone. Afterward B drove E over to the Marriott where everyone is staying and they had fun talking to their cousins (my sister's children and grandchildren). They decided that MB would take both E and my oldest niece to the airport.

The Family Disperses

View 2015 Grenada (and 2013) on greatgrandmaR's travel map.

I was having serious diarrhea problems today. I spend the night burping up something that I ate and passing gas and with tummy rumbling and not sleeping.

So I did not go down to breakfast - I ate some cheese and rye sandwiches. We took E to the Marriot (after we reassured Bob that it was the correct Marriott). And I'm convinced that I do not really like that hotel although I'm not a fan of this one either. Anyway I went and sat with the my sister's family for breakfast and E left with MB to go to the airport. They didn't take Meghan because MB's husband was in a lot of pain from an infection, so they drove back to CT.

Then my sister saw all of her family off - Liz and her group went first (without fixing the TV so that my sister could see TV again) and then her son and family except Meghan went to the airport to fly back to Detroit.Nephew

And last my youngest niece left to drive down to D.C.

Then I was a little uncomfortable still and we went to a bathroom - there are no bathrooms on the main lobby level and you have to take an elevator (or stairs) to get to one. My sister took her granddaughter Meghan to the train station for the 12:10 train

(I do not know why she could not go with her parents), and then she did some errands - picked up her cell phone where she had left it at the pharmacy when she picked up her eye medicine, went by the church to see what to do about the flowers, and went to her house and picked up some misc. food as she has quite a lot left from the memorial service.

My sister spent the afternoon and evening with us at our hotel. She fell asleep and had a nap of about half an hour. We had a nice visit and she went out and got some mac and cheese from Ruby Tuesday and she was getting sleepy so she went home about 7:30. I was worried about her being alone, but I didn't really want to follow her suggestion of her spending the night here in one of the beds (or on the couch). It would not have been comfortable.

So we went to sleep early and my episode seems to be abated

A Cold Disastrous New Years Day

Accident

I seem to be OK now. Just in case, I finished up the cheese for breakfast. We left the hotel and were on the road by 9:15.

We were on pace to get home by about 1300. We crossed the Delaware Memorial bridge at 10:30, and were going through Middletown before 11:00.

We were both wearing our seat belts, and the GPS and phone were both attached to the car. I had not put the GPS on the dash because when I am wearing a seat belt I couldn't reach the little beanbag that it sits in on the dashboard without undoing the seat belt. When we got on 301, I figured I did not need to watch where we were going, so I got out my Kindle and was reading.

When we got to Annapolis, we were going to get off 301/50 and go down MD 2. At West Street there is a light. We were the third car at the light. The light was green for us, and the two cars in front of us went through the green light. I looked up as a white Ford F150 sped through on West Street (going West). We weren't going fast, but we were right close to the light and Bob swerved to the left and braked, but we were too close and we collided.

The airbags went off. We sat there. stunned for a minute. I got my phone and called 911. They asked me where I was and I said I didn't know - that I was somewhere in Parole. The 911 people said they knew where I was and asked if there were any injuries. Bob had gotten out of the car. Someone came over to my side and asked me if I was hurt but I couldn't open the window with the car off and my door was kind of stuck so I could only open it a little. Bob said that the fender on that side was pushed back into it.

I asked if the other driver was OK and was told that he was. There was a man standing there in between the two vehicles (we had spun the Ford around to it was pointing north and it had a flat right rear tire and some body damage in that area. The man said for us (Bob) to get back in the car as he would be safer there.

A lady came and gave us her card and said if we needed a witness that she saw him run the red light. I'm thinking that she was in a car behind us and maybe the man was with her.

The police arrived and they put a car on our left with flashers on and also at least one fire truck and some EMTs. Someone pulled the fender off my door so the door would open and the EMT talked to me. I said I was fine. Bob said the other driver never got out of the truck but that his wife was there (??).

They called a tow truck and the police gave me the receipt for the car but said that they were closed and couldn't get the stuff out of the car until tomorrow and they asked what our plans were, and Bob said he didn't know. In the meantime, I had for some reason decided to call Jean (the cat sitter), and then I messaged my kids on FB from my phone. And then I called Progressive to file a claim. By then I had gotten the police report with all the information So people were then calling and the insurance lady asked what time the accident occurred and I accidentally hung up on her when I turned my hand over to look at my watch (I was holding the papers in my right hand). Our daughter D called and asked why I didn't call her for a ride.

The police allowed us to get our suitcases, and then my scooter out of the car before they took it away and then put us in the police car and tried to find an open car rental place, but none of the ones there were open. So he took us to the south district Anne Arundel county police station. He looked at me and said I had a bruise and swollen place on my left cheekbone. I couldn't see my own cheek and his visor with the mirror had a lot of stuff on it so I used the phone to take a selfie to look at myself, but I couldn't really tell. But I do have a little bruise there

On the way I called our daughter D back and said yes we needed a ride and the policeman told her where the station was. It was warm inside the station, but I could not get a signal on the phone at the police station - I had to go outside. D suggested that we rent a car from BWI which is open 24/7. So I did that.

D got there and we loaded our stuff in the car and then Bob said that his pills were in the cooler, so we went to the tow truck place and I called the number on the piece of paper I had and said that Bob had left his pills in the car (although after we called, he said that he remembered putting them in the suitcase, but the scooter charger was still in the car). She said that she'd send someone to let us in and it would be about 20 minutes. We sat on the street and talked

The tow truck man came and D and Bob unloaded stuff including my cane and the kindle and the GPS and the cooler etc. While they were doing that I called Jamie at the Hyundai dealership that we had bought the car from and said we'd need a replacement. She said the 2018 hybrids are not out yet.

Then we drove to BWI. Bob and D went in - the Hertz lady had said a Ford Focus but she had not put down that it was a one-way rental. While they were in there I got an email on my phone that said I could check on the claim on their website, but I absolutely could NOT log on from my phone as it refused to take any passwords.

Bob and D came back with a Ford Fiesta which D said was tiny, and we did manage to get all the stuff into it. And we drove down to Leonardtown. Bob seemed a little shaky and he said he was having balance problems, but he refuses to admit that he's sore in any way. We stopped at KFC and got dinner to go and then he unloaded the car, and petted the cats (the ones you can pet). I turned the modem on. When I left the DSL line was not working and we got a message from Verizon on the phone (Monday) that said it was OK. and it was.

I managed to log on to Progressive but nothing is there yet. I still don't know if they have authorized a rental car for the accident [They didn't] I downloaded all the photos and we looked at the mail. The new battery for the phone upstairs came while we were gone, so maybe it will hold a charge long enough for a long conversation.

Then Bob said that the hot water pipe was frozen. Just up here in our bathroom - it is OK in the kitchen. He couldn't find the heat lamp, but he turned up the heat downstairs and put a fan to blow into the coat closet under the stairs.

I do have a bruise on my cheek - probably either the kindle or the GPS flew up and hit me in the face - bent my glasses so that when I leaned over, they fell off.
Developing black eye

I bent them back. And my right shoulder is sorer than usual. When my mother had her accident, she was wearing her seatbelt under her arm to keep it from cutting into her neck and she had some bruises on her ribcage. But I was wearing the camera vest and the seat belt was over it. The camera kept the seatbelt from riding up too far and I think the camera vest distributed the force over a wider area. I can't tell whether Bob is feeling sore or not. He says not.

January 2, 2018

We rented a car down here, and drove up to BWI and turned in the Ford Focus. We went to the impound lot and got all the rest of the stuff out of the car.

4 January 2018

The insurance company gave us the full value of the car, so we bought a 2017 hybrid with that money plus some savings.

My next trip was not until June when I took my youngest granddaughter to Tanzania.
